Local police are alerting the community to a scam where individuals falsely claim to be immigration officials and demand personal information or payment through the phone or messages.

In addition, the SPPD was made aware of packages being sent that appear to contain deportation letters (like the one pictured). The packages are not real and apparently intended to prank community members. While they contain what appear to be an official document, “don’t fall for it,” police said.

The SPPD advises not to share personal details, adding that real immigration officials “will never ask for payments over the phone or threaten immediate action.”

The SPPD said it has not yet received calls about immigration scams, “but if you are unsure about something you see or hear, call us immediately at (510) 724-1111.”
