A San Pablo police officer received the prestigious Life Saving Medal for his swift actions in providing emergency medical care to a person suffering from an overdose earlier this year.
On Jan. 6, patrolling Officer Brian Ashley came upon a young man sitting on the sidewalk curb, slumped-over in the broad daylight, according to the San Pablo Police Department. The officer stopped to check on him and saw that he was struggling to breathe.
The officer recognized the symptoms of an overdose, so he placed the man in a recovery position and administered Naloxone (Narcan) while awaiting medical personnel.
“It took four doses of Narcan before the young man regained consciousness,” police said.
The man was transported to the hospital and has since made a full recovery, police said.
The SPPD released body cam footage from the incident.
The Life Saving Medal presented to Officer Ashley at the City Council meeting recognizes his significant actions in saving this man’s life on Jan. 6.
“Thank you, Officer Ashley, for your dedicated, courageous, and outstanding service to our San Pablo community,” the SPPD stated.
