Pinole police used a GPS tracking system calld Star Chase in order to track a stolen car without having to engage in a dangerous high-speed chase.

At around 4:26 p.m. on Jan. 2, officers were involved in an incident involving a stolen vehicle that failed to yield, according to the Pinole Police Department.

To avoid a high-speed pursuit, officers deployed Star Chase, described as “a cutting-edge GPS tracking system designed to enhance the safety of high-speed pursuits,” police said.

The small GPS tracker was launched at the vehicle, adhering to the car and enabling real-time tracking.

Since they had continuous updates on the vehicle’s whereabouts, officers were able to monitor the car which eventually entered the City of Hercules.

Warned in advance, Hercules police deployed spike strips that disabled all four of the stolen vehicle’s tires.

The suspects then fled on foot but were quickly apprehended by officers.

“This operation highlights how technology and collaboration keep our community safe—by reducing the dangers of high-speed pursuits while ensuring accountability and swift action,” Pinole police said.
