An officer-involved shooting in Point Richmond is under investigation.
At about 9 a.m. Wednesday, Richmond police officers were serving a search warrant on a home in the 1200 block of Sanderling Island when they encountered and shot an armed man who was threatening them, according to RPD Public Information Officer Sgt. Donald Patchin. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
At 6:30 p.m. the same day, while police investigators were continuing to process the crime scene, they discovered an explosive device and contacted the bomb squad at Travis Air Force Base. The bomb squad examined the device and deemed it was safe to be removed from the crime scene and to be destroyed off-site.
Sgt. Patchin said Wednesday’s execution of the search warrant stemmed from an incident Sunday evening during which Richmond officers responded to calls of an individual brandishing and discharging a firearm. After obtaining information on the suspect, officers arrived Wednesday morning to serve a search warrant on the suspect’s home on Sanderling Island, according to Sgt. Patchin.
Further details about the active investigation weren’t immediately available.
This was the first Richmond officer-involved shooting since 2020, according to police.
