A GoFundMe fundraiser has been launched to support the family of Tyler Dickson, 20, the promising student-athlete from San Pablo who was found murdered at a campground in Oroville last weekend.
“As our family deals with this heartbreak, we ask for your support in ensuring our son, brother, nephew, cousin and friend has a heartfelt home going ceremony,” according to the GoFundMe.
Dickson, a student athlete at Contra Costa College who was a star quarterback and basketball player at El Cerrito High, graduating in 2019, was reportedly camping at the Bidwell Marina Campground at the time he was killed. About 5 a.m. Saturday, July 3, Butte County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the campground on a report of an injured person and found Dickson inside a tent. Medical personnel determined he was deceased, and detectives subsequently gathered evidence and information that indicated he had been murdered, the Sheriff’s Office said. Further details about the case were not provided and the investigation was ongoing, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Dickson’s murder has left his family and members of the community in deep mourning. Andre Williams, athletic director for the San Pablo Cowboys football and cheer program who was also Dickson’s Godfather, said he was “at a loss” for how this could have happened. “He’s a kid who’s never had a fight before,” the coach said. “So mild mannered, truly a great kid. He didn’t hang around with wrong crowd.”
Dickson’s mother, Jade Nelson, organized the GoFundMe. She described her son as “a well loved young man by his family, peers and community.” Dickson was the youngest son with two siblings.
“We pray that you will continue to support our family through this difficult time,” Nelson shared in the fundraiser. “I ask everyone to please keep us in your prayers as we attempt to figure out how to carry on with our lives after such a devastating loss.”
