The resident of a home on Cutting Boulevard fatally shot a suspected burglar early Saturday, according to the El Cerrito Police Department.

Police responded to the home at 1:13 a.m. after a female resident reported an intruder in the home’s detached garage. She said she stayed in the bedroom with her daughter and called 911 while her husband armed himself and left the bedroom to investigate, police said.

Officers arrived and found a deceased male laying in the roadway near the residence.

According to police, “the husband discovered the intruder was at the backdoor of the home and appeared to be trying to enter the home via a glass door.” The husband said he shouted at the intruder, who did not leave. The husband said he felt threatened and concerned for his and his family’s safety and shot the intruder, police said. The intruder immediately ran from the scene.

“The investigation led officers to believe that the suspect was in the process of committing a burglary and had most likely been committing other burglaries in the area,” police said.

The identity of the deceased male is not being released at this time, as his family still needs to be notified, police said. No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.
