A 38-year-old man is facing murder and carjacking charges in connection with a shooting in El Sobrante last month that killed 52-year-old Michael Bagwell of Richmond, according to the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff.
Jorge Ortega Campos, a resident of Richmond and Pinole, was being held in Martinez Detention Facility on unrelated charged when detectives identified him as the suspect in the killing, the sheriff’s office said.
The fatal shooting was reported to authorities at 12:22 p.m., prompting sheriffs to respond to the intersection of Jasmine Court and Jasmine Way in El Sobrante. Arriving deputies found Bagwell deceased from gunshot wounds. Further details about what led to the murder were not disclosed.
When Campos was arrested on unrelated charges shortly after the homicide, he was in Concord, the sheriff’s office said.
“Apparently, an alert resident called police when he saw Campos acting suspiciously on Mountbatten Court in Concord,” the sheriff’s office said. “That resident was able to detain him until police arrived. At the time, Campos was booked into the MDF on numerous charges including drug possession and parole violation.”
Campos is being held without bail at the Martinez Detention Facility.
