In honor of Earth Day 2026, cities and community organizations across West Contra Costa County have scheduled environmental service projects and festivals for mid-to-late April.

Groundwork Richmond will host a maintenance event on the Richmond Greenway on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the Richmond Greenway’s Ohio Avenue entrance to perform mulching, weeding, and light pruning for trees recently planted near Unity Park. Sign up for this event here.

On the same day, The Watershed Project and Urban Tilth are coordinating activities in North Richmond. A cleanup of Wildcat Creek will take place at the Lucky A’s Ballfield from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Simultaneously, a community planting event is scheduled at the newly renovated Shields-Reid Park from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Following these service projects, a North Richmond Earth Day Festival featuring live music, food, and a petting zoo will run from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Lucky A’s Ballfield.

The City of Pinole has scheduled its “Pinole Earth Walk” for Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Participants will meet at Fernandez Park for a 1.5-mile walk along the Pinole Creek and Bay Trail to show support for clean air and water (City of Pinole, 2026). Environmental partners will be on-site at the park to provide educational resources and activities for the community.

El Cerrito’s Earth Day celebration on April 25 features citywide volunteer work parties from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents can join activities like park tidying, litter removal, and invasive plant pulling, followed by a complimentary seedling giveaway. Baxter Creek, Canyon Trail Park, the Huber Park stairs, and the northern gateways at Knott Avenue and Key Boulevard are among the cleanup sites.

The East Bay Regional Park District celebrates Earth Day on April 25 with volunteer projects across the district. Key West Contra Costa opportunities include invasive plant removal at Point Pinole Regional Shoreline. Other regional events feature shoreline cleanups and garden maintenance in Oakland, Alameda, Livermore, Castro Valley, and Fremont.

For those unable to attend in-person events, a virtual “Earth Day Expedition” focusing on regional wildlife adaptations and habitat protection is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
