High school seniors in the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) have until Monday, Jan. 19, to apply for the annual Chevron Richmond Black History Awareness Scholarship.
This long-standing program awards thousands of dollars to local students each year to help pay for college. To be eligible, you must be a graduating senior at a district school.
The scholarship honors the legacy of Dr. William F. King, a legendary Richmond engineer who held over 40 patents and spent his career mentoring young people. For over 20 years, the Chevron Richmond Black Employee Network has used this program to highlight students who show leadership and a commitment to their community. Past winners have received awards of up to $3,500 to support their education.
To apply, students need to fill out an online form and email a few specific documents to the committee. These include a high school transcript and a letter of recommendation. The most important part of the application is a 500-to-750-word essay. This year, the prompt asks students to write about a person or event from Black History that influenced their own leadership goals.
The committee is looking for essays that are creative, well-written, and professional. Make sure your name and page numbers are at the top left of every page and that you save your essay as a PDF or Word document rather than typing it directly into an email. All materials must be submitted by the 11:59 p.m. deadline this coming Monday.
