Richmond aims to improve pedestrian safety at a busy crossing on Macdonald Avenue near Nicholl Park.

City staff are recommending a construction contract with FJ&I Engineering, Inc. for about $276,772 (including about $36,000 in contingency funds) to install new safety features at the crossing between 30th and 31st streets,  where neighbors, park visitors and children frequently cross the street. Improvements includes flashing pedestrian beacons to alert drivers, curb extensions that shorten the walk across the street and improve visibility, median refuge island so people can cross one direction at a time, and yield markings and red curb zones to clear sight lines.

The crossing was flagged by community members and Richmond’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee as a high-priority location.

Funding for the project comes from a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grant and city capital funds, with a small transfer from another project to support local matching requirements.

City staff hopes construction can start early next year.
