The Pinole Police Department is hosting a first-come, first-served backpack and school supplies giveaway for city students on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The backpack giveaway will run from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Pinole Police Department, 880 Tennent Ave. No registration is required, but proof of Pinole residency or a valid student ID will be checked at the door. Supplies are limited, and families are encouraged to arrive early.

Officer Jazmine Louis, the department’s Community Outreach Unit officer, is coordinating the giveaway and has led the effort for the past five years as a way to bring neighbors together in support of local youth.

“Times are hard for a lot of people,” Louis said, “so any way that we can pull our community together to let them know that ‘Hey, we got your back, and if you need anything, you know we’re here for you.’”

Donations are sought from the community ahead of the giveaway. Most needed include backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, binders, folders, rulers, hand sanitizer and tissues; items can be delivered to the Police Department lobby during business hours, where staff will collect them.

Questions about donating or eligibility can be directed to the Pinole Police Department’s Community Outreach office at (510) 914-0480 or via email at [email protected].
