San Pablo police Lt. Dan Wiegers, a homegrown law enforcement leader who dedicated his career to serving the community that raised him, recently retired after 26 years of service.

The San Pablo City Council honored Wiegers on the day of his retirement on Aug. 4, which also happened to be his 50th birthday. Mayor Arturo Cruz, who grew up around the corner from Wiegers and often played ball with him, presented an official proclamation honoring the lieutenant’s service and wishing him well in retirement.

Wiegers’ journey began as a teenager when he joined the Richmond Police Explorer program at age 15, according to San Pablo police Chief Brian Bubar, who spoke during a proclamation ceremony. Raised at the corner of 17th Street and Post Avenue, he spent his youth in the city’s parks and neighborhoods, often playing ball with Mayor Cruz, who lived around the corner from him. After graduating from Richmond High School, Wiegers answered a higher call to service, enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps and serving overseas before returning home to join the San Pablo Police Department in 1999.

Chief Bubar described Wiegers’ career as a model of community-based service.

“Dan has committed a quarter of a century to this community and has been part of its transformation, from the most violent city per capita in the nation to where we are today,” Chief Bubar said. “His career is an example of what is possible and what we strive to achieve: taking community members who grow up here, care about this community, and commit their career to making it better. I am better because I have worked with Dan Wiegers, and this organization and city will forever be indebted to him.”

Wiegers’ career path included assignments as a field training officer, training coordinator, and training sergeant before moving into investigations as a violent crimes and sexual assault detective. He earned a reputation as a tenacious investigator who solved numerous homicides and major cases. Promoted to sergeant in 2015 and to lieutenant in 2018, Wiegers eventually commanded the Patrol, Administrative, and Investigations Divisions, overseeing nearly every operational aspect of the department. Along the way, he mentored younger officers and helped shape the department’s professional culture.

“Today is only the second time in 50 years that I’m leaving San Pablo, but the first time I won’t be a resident or employee here,” Wiegers said at his retirement ceremony.

He expressed gratitude to both current and past city councils for their support of the police department, and credited two key leaders for shaping his career: former City Manager Matt Rodriguez, who he called “by far the best city manager I’ve ever worked for,” and former Police Chief Ron Raman, who he said “changed the department forever” and left it in capable hands with Chief Bubar.

“It’s been an honor and a privilege serving my community for the past 26 years,” Wiegers said. “I thank you all.”
