California native plants and a new bench may be part of this historic circle’s future.

Residents first expressed interest in revitalizing the Clinton Hill circle park on 36th Street and Clinton Avenue last year. That led residents Cosmo Martinez and Nancy Lewis to organize Friends of the Circle, a sub-committee of the North and East Neighborhood Council.

Neighbors were surveyed about possible circle park renovations at local events and through social media and door-knocking, according to Vice Mayor Claudia Jimenez, who is forwarding the proposal to City Council for consideration on Tuesday.

“The responses indicated a strong desire for the replacement of the existing juniper bushes with California native plants to enhance both beauty and sustainability and the installation of a bench,” the Councilmember’s proposal states.

Using that feedback and with the collaboration of landscape architect Lea Farley and gardener Liz Bittner, a design and cost estimate was developed.

The Friends of the Circle will present their plans to the City Council on Tuesday. The group estimates the project will cost about $44,000. In city documents, Jimenez suggests a possible source of funding, stating this project “reflects a community-driven vision for the park, directly supporting the goals set forth by the Council for the Chevron settlement funds.”

The Circle has quite a history, according to photos dating back to 1916 that showed the circle was once a fountain.
