The incident occurred at 2:30 p.m., when Officer Oswald heard a medical call about an infant who was not breathing near the West County Health Center in San Pablo.
He happened to be just around the corner, so he arrived at the scene within seconds and found the baby’s mother crying for help.
The officer began administering infant CPR techniques “which ultimately dislodged the obstruction and saved the child’s life,” police said.
“Calls like these highlight the incredible stakes our officers face daily where seconds truly can mean life or death,” police said. “We have been in contact with the mother of the child who has since recovered and is doing great.”
Officer Oswald joined the SPPD in 2017 after working with the Concord Police Department as an Explorer. He was also a member of the Army Reserve.
