San Pablo Lions to be honored by city for winning ways
2022 Lions Gold Team Champs.

Hear them roar. The City of San Pablo is set to publicly recognize the San Pablo Lions soccer team for winning the Gold Division of NorCal Premier Soccer this year and earning the right to move up to NorCal’s State Premier Division, a much higher level of competition.

The recognition by Mayor Rita Xavier and the city is set to take place at Monday’s City Council meeting.

The Lions play for San Pablo United Youth Soccer Club (SPUYSC) and is made up of dedicated coaches and players who live in the San Pablo and Richmond communities. The club uses the Rumrill Sports Center to hone its skills.

“The Lions coaches and team manager strive to create a soccer family with each player
and their own family and have built a strong and united communal bond where they fundraise for tournament fees and equipment for our own youth,” the city said.

All that hard work and teamwork have paid off. The San Pablo Lions won the Silver Division of NorCal Premier Soccer in Fall 2021 before clinching the Gold Division crown this past spring.

Mayor Xavier said she and the city “deem it an honor and pleasure” to extend a Certificate of Recognition to the team’s deserving players and coaches.

The Lions’ coaches include Jose Leon, Jorge Menjivar, Morlin Cortez and team Manager Rosie Hernandez. The champion players are Angel Leon-Hernandez, Jorge Menjivar, Alejandro Velazquez, Gabriel Joel Leon-Hernandez, Diego Ortega, Erick Cervantes, Francisco Rugama, Henry Navarro, Juan Elias, Joshua Bautista, Emmanuel Dominguez, Oswaldo Franquez, Mathew Zalas, Victor Alba, Marlon Ruiz, Mateo Kanh, Geovanni Gaytan, and Francisco Ceja.
