A pedestrian was fatally struck by vehicle in El Sobrante Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol

The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as David Gonzales, 36, who was described as a transient.

The CHP responded to the collision on San Pablo Dam Road east of Clark Road on a report of a collision. Officers arrived to find Gonzales unresponsive. He was transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, where he was pronounced dead, the CHP said.

The driver of the Chrysler 300 that struck Gonzales, a 65-year-old man from El Sobrante, remained at the scene. A preliminary investigation revealed the driver was traveling east on stretch of San Pablo Dam Road with limited lighting and no street lights, the CHP said. The pedestrian was walking on foot outside of a designated crosswalk and was walking in a northern direction. The driver was unable to see him as he crossed in front of his vehicle, the CHP said.
