The driver of a 53-foot box truck that struck a guardrail on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 in San Pablo Monday morning before rolling down an embankment was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The solo-vehicle crash was reported to CHP at 5:05 a.m. just west of El Portal Drive and two lanes were shut down for an investigation.
“The initial investigation indicates that the truck drifted off the roadway where it collided into the guardrail causing catastrophic damage,” CHP said in a statement this morning.
CHP is asking any witnesses to the collision or the events leading up to it to contact CHP Oakland, (510) 450-3821.
The lane nearest to the guardrail will remain closed until about 5 p.m. while the Department of Transportation performs emergency guardrail repair, according to CHP.
