University of California President Janet Napolitano visited Hercules middle and high schools last week in order to kick of the application filing period for the University of California.

The UC Application Filing Period ends Nov. 30.

During a pep rally for freshman and sophomores, “President Napolitano touted the programs across all nine UC campuses and stressed the importance of the college experience,” according to the West Contra Costa Unified School District.

Napolitano also sat down with eighth graders at Hercules Middle School for a roundtable discussion about college, and met with community members including representatives from the Parent Teacher Association, Multilingual District Advisory Committee, College is Real and others.

Jamal Collins, UC’s Financial Aid Outreach and Communications liaison, told students, “Don’t let the cost intimidate you.” He advised them to apply for financial aid and outside scholarships and noted 57 percent of UC undergraduate students do not pay tuition.
