A 59-year-old El Sobrante man died in a solo crash on westbound Interstate Highway 80 in Pinole early Wednesday.

Dexter Francis was identified by the county coroner’s office as the driver of a 2000 Audi involved in a rollover crash near Pinole Valley Road about 1:10 a.m.

CHP said its initial investigation indicates Francis was traveling at a high rate of speed and veered off the roadway and into the concrete sound wall. The car then overturned and slid across the lanes and came to rest blocking two lanes.

Emergency personnel extricated Francis from the vehicle and began life-saving procedures, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

CHP said it did not immediately know if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

The incident caused lane closures until just after 3 a.m.

Any witnesses to this collision or the events leading up to it are asked to contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.
