A mentally distressed person who climbed a utility pole in Richmond was brought down by police after a 2.5-hour conversation with a mental health officer on Tuesday, according to the Richmond Police Department.
At 8:24 a.m., Richmond police responded to a report of an individual exhibiting acting strange in the area of 36th Street and Clinton Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a female in distress who had climbed a utility pole and appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis. That officer worked to provide comfort and reassurance to the person over the course of 2.5 hours, “ensuring she felt heard and supported,” police said.
“With the collaboration of the Richmond Fire Department, the officers were able to safely restrain her and bring her down from the pole without any injury to her or those around her,” police said. “She was transported to a local hospital where she will receive the mental health care she needs.”
