A new 5,000 square foot gym opened last month in Richmond’s Iron Triangle neighborhood that offers youth sports programs and rentals for public use.

Legacy Gym opened up in a warehouse at 1 W. Barrett Ave. on Sept. 13 and currently offers basketball, football and softball programs for girls and boys ages 7 to 16, said spokesperson Jayna Manto. Sports programs at Legacy Gym are offered at rates from $50 per month and higher, which includes uniform and tournament fees.

Legacy Gym additionally is open to the public for rent at $75 per hour, with a minimum of two hours with a $150 deposit. Monthly rentals are offered at $1,200 per month.

The space features a basketball gym and plenty of room for certified instructors to host exercise classes. The gym does not offer exercise equipment or personal trainers.

The gym is an important new community offering, Manto said. “We want to give the youth an opportunity to join our Legacy family to stay off the streets and grow in a positive environment,” she said.

So far, the gym has received positive feedback.

“The community has shown nothing but love and excitement for this opportunity for our youth,” Manto said.

The addition of Legacy Gym further cements 1 W. Barrett as a burgeoning center for sports. For the past two years, Traverse Fitness, a ninja and fitness gym for all ages, has operated there and continues to do so Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Sundays from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Legacy Gym is inviting the public to its grand opening celebration and fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 9, starting at 2 p.m. There will be food, fun, games and a raffle.
