This Saturday, Dec. 6, from 8 a.m. to noon, The Watershed Project (TWP), in partnership with Golden Gate Bird Alliance, will host a community volunteer nature walk and bioswale workday at the Baxter Creek Bioswale, located beside Booker T. Anderson Community Center in Richmond.
The event will combine birdwatching, native-plant gardening, creek cleanup and hands-on work to support local biodiversity and water quality.
Volunteers should arrive at 7:45 a.m. to register. A guided bird walk begins at 8 a.m., followed by the main workday at 9:30 a.m. Activities include planting native species, expanding the pollinator garden, removing trash from the creek and surrounding area, and learning how green-stormwater infrastructure helps filter pollutants from stormwater runoff before it reaches the creek.
Built in 2018 and maintained by TWP, the Baxter Creek Bioswale is planted with more than 30 native species and serves as a vital “green filter” for runoff from the community-center parking lot. It helps keep contaminants out of the creek and Bay, supports pollinators and birds, and showcases how urban green infrastructure can enhance both habitat and water quality, according to TWP.
Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome. Bring layers, rain gear if needed, a reusable water bottle, and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. The event will go on rain or shine.
