The Richmond Police Officers Association (RPOA) launched a Fund-A-Hero campaign to support the family of Officer Jonathan “Jon” Platzner, a dedicated public servant who passed away suddenly while off duty after suffering a massive heart attack.

Officer Platzner was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and respected member of the Richmond Police Department since 2012. Before joining the RPD, he served with the Suisun City and Stockton Police Departments. His colleagues and community members remember him as a man of deep integrity, kindness and service.

“Jon was more than just a police officer — he was a husband, father, and friend who cared deeply about those he served,” said RPOA President Ben Therriault. “His passing has left a tremendous void in our department and our community.”

A Marine Corps artilleryman who served during the Gulf War, Platzner brought the same dedication and courage to his police career. Over the years, he was recognized multiple times by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for his work in keeping Richmond’s roads safe from impaired drivers.

In the community, Officer Platzner was known for his warmth and generosity. He was often seen engaging with local residents, at one point photographed giving a toy to a child curious about his police motorcycle. “You were one of a kind,” said Michelle Denise Milam, the City of Richmond’s Crime Prevention Manager.

On Saturday, the Richmond Police Department gathered with family, friends, and fellow law enforcement officers at Golden Hills Church in Brentwood to celebrate Platzner’s life. The RPD thanked the San Pablo, El Cerrito, Brentwood, and Antioch police departments for backing up the RPD while they were paying their respects.

The Fund-A-Hero campaign, organized through the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC), directly benefits Officer Platzner’s wife, Mishell, and their three daughters. The fundraiser will help cover funeral and memorial expenses, urgent household costs such as rent, utilities, and groceries, as well as grief counseling and other immediate needs following this sudden loss.

“We’re halfway to our goal of $40,000,” Therriault said. “Every donation — big or small — provides real comfort and stability to Jon’s family as they navigate the difficult days ahead.”

Community members are invited to contribute or share the campaign to help the RPOA reach its goal.
