A shooting near Downer Elementary School in San Pablo on Tuesday morning prompted a precautionary campus lockdown.
San Pablo police later arrested a 16-year-old Richmond High School student in connection with the incident, along with a 22-year-old adult relative suspected of being an accessory.
Police received reports of a shooting in the area of 20th Street and Sanford Avenue around 9:42 a.m.
“A witness reported hearing gunshots, and saw a male suspect pointing a handgun at a vehicle with tinted windows,” police said.
The involved parties fled the scene in opposite directions.
Responding police located multiple expended shell casings at the scene, but they did not initially locate the parties involved. The campus was placed on lockdown until 1:40 p.m. Meanwhile, detectives launched an investigation and quickly identified a juvenile suspect.
They served a search warrant at a home in the 1800 block of Wilcox Avenue, where a 22-year-old adult family member was taken into custody on suspicion of accessory to the crime. Evidence related to the shooting was located and recovered, police said.
The juvenile suspect was subsequently taken into custody at Richmond High after detectives learned he was attending class there. He was booked into Juvenile Hall on a firearms-related charge.
“Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe this was an isolated incident and that the occupant(s) of the vehicle were the intended target(s) of this shooting,” police said. “An interagency medical alert was immediately broadcast to area hospitals following initial reports of the shooting; however, at this time, it is still unknown if the victim(s) were injured during this incident.”
This incident remains an active investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the San Pablo Police Department Investigations Division at 510-215-3150.
