East Brother Beer isn’t the only Richmond entity taking part in Port Chicago Weekend. The SS Red Oak Victory is hosting free tours in partnership with the Port Chicago Alliance on Sunday. In a blog post, East Brother Beer expressed honor to be part of the remembrance. “We’re proud to be part of Port Chicago Weekend 2025, a Bay Area-wide festival of music, art, and community built around an extraordinary act of resistance that happened right here, less than 20 miles from our brewery in Richmond.”
The Port Chicago disaster of July 17, 1944, resulted in over 320 deaths—an event marked today as the deadliest home‑front explosion of WWII. The subsequent mutiny trials of 50 Black sailors and their eventual exoneration became a catalyst for change in the U.S. Navy and the civil‑rights movement.
