New test maps and signage installed at El Cerrito del Norte BART Station in December 2024 are a hit among riders, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, citing a new survey.

The maps and signage were installed at El Cerrito and also the Santa Rosa Transit Mall, which are both considered “test locations.” In a survey about the new installations, nearly 90 percent of riders found the new environments “easy” or “very easy” to navigate — a boost of up to 32 percent compared to baseline conditions.

Notable improvements included clarity in locating transit routes, understanding bus arrival times, and determining direction of travel.

The survey found that route number and destination are the top pieces of information sought at bus stops. And naturally, frequency information helps riders plan trips effectively.

Finalized signage and maps will be rolled out at seven additional Bay Area locations starting in 2026: Powell Station, Millbrae Station, Dublin/Pleasanton Station, Vallejo Transit Center & Ferry, Larkspur SMART & Ferry and Suisun-Faifield Station.
