The Richmond Public Library’s Main Branch will feature Dr. Shanice Robinson-Blacknell in its next “Local Author Talk” on Monday, June 2 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

During the Local Author Talk in the library’s Madeline F. Whittlesey Community Room, Dr. Robinson-Blacknell will read from and discuss her memoir, The Gangster’s Scholar: Love Behind Bars. The book, which was released in April, currently has five stars on Amazon.

“Through deeply personal narratives and practical insights, this work seeks to challenge stigmas surrounding prison culture and highlight the critical role families play in the rehabilitation process,” according to the book’s dust jacket.

“By emphasizing connection, resilience and accountability, The Gangsters Scholar underscores the transformative power of love and support in the face of systemic challenges.”

The book is set against the backdrop of Richmond, with Dr. Robinson-Blacknell and her husband, Joe “Fatter” Blacknell, challenging prevailing narratives about incarceration, love, and the transformative power of second chances, according to the library.
