Snapper’s Seafood took to social media yesterday to share that its owner, Jabari Muhammad, is battling a serious illness that’s derailed him from overseeing the daily operations of the iconic Richmond business.

“As a small business owner, his presence is not just valued — it’s vital. Without him at the helm, the business built from the ground up is facing uncertain times,” said Genevieve Beaulieu, the organizer of a GoFundMe, on the fundraising page aimed at raising support for Muhammed’s recovery and to keep Snapper’s Seafood running in his absence.

She said the GoFundMe’s donations will be applied toward medical expenses, operational costs and sustaining the livelihood of a business that means so much to so many. The nature of Muhammad’s serious illness was not disclosed.

Beaulieu added that Muhammad has always been a giver, “Whether it was a meal for someone in need, a first job for a young person in the neighborhood, or a listening ear for anyone who walked through the doors. Now it’s our turn to give back.”

Muhammad is a well-known pillar of the Richmond community who has served up his restaurant’s “fresh off the hook” soul food take on seafood alongside his family for more than three decades.

Aside from donating to the GoFundMe, community members can support Snapper’s Seafood by visiting the business and purchasing specialties such as mac & cheese, collard greens, red beans & rice, red snapper, catfish, filet of soul, tilapia, salmon and so much more, including desserts like peach cobbler and banana pudding. Check out the menu here.

Again, click to donate to the GoFundMe, or find Snapper’s Seafood at 1501 Ohio Ave. in Richmond, nearby Unity Park or order delivery. Questions? Call the restaurant at (510) 235-6328.
