Walmart set to remodel Richmond store

Walmart is rolling out plans for a store remodel in Richmond this year at 1400 Hilltop Mall Rd., to also include 56 other store remodels throughout California and 13 in the Bay Area. 

As part of the upgrades, Walmart will implement a new look with bigger and bolder signage to better showcase its merchandise; expand departments with new selections that reflect more in-demand items; grow online pickup and delivery to better fulfill increasing online customer orders; and revamp its pharmacy by adding wider aisles, a private screening room and privacy checkout areas. 

Over the past five years, Walmart has invested more than $800 million upgrading stores throughout the state. 

Jay Cordray, Walmart’s senior vice president and West U.S. Business Operations lead, said the company’s stores often serve as the heartbeat of the communities it operates in, and these remodels are a testament to its dedication to enhancing that role. 

“By investing in our stores and associates, we are not only improving the shopping experience, but also reinforcing our commitment to being a vital part of the community’s fabric, helping to build a brighter future for all,” he said. 

In addition to Richmond, other Bay Area cities set for Walmart store remodels include Antioch, San Ramon, San Jose (3), Mountain View, Union City, Vallejo, Milpitas, Santa Clara (2) and Windsor. A fourteenth store remodel in nearby Salinas is also planned.  

Walmart’s store remodels come as the City of Richmond is looking to re-envision the approximately 143-acre site encompassing the Hilltop regional shopping mall and surrounding areas directly to the south and east in what is called the Hilltop Horizon Specific Plan.  The Walmart is reportedly going to remain in its Richmond location despite the redevelopment.
