A GoFundMe has been launched by the family of Hilario “Layo” Martinez, a Richmond business owner who was shot on Thursday, Jan. 23 while operating his food truck with his mother in Vallejo. The fundraiser aims to help the victim with his medical expenses.

The shooting, which occurred at point blank range in front of Martinez’ mother, happened at approximately 9:42 p.m. that night outside Omayh Food Mart and Liquor in the 200 block of Marin Street in Vallejo, according to the Vallejo Police Department’s incident log. Martinez sustained life threatening injuries and remains in critical care, said his family on the fundraising page. The Vallejo Police Department has not responded to the Richmond Standard’s request for further details as of this writing.

Martinez is the owner of Mariscos El Layo, a casual eatery located inside the Family Market and Deli at 700 Pennsylvania Ave. in Richmond. In addition to asking for support for Martinez via the GoFundMe, the family asked community members to also patronize his business. As the business owner continues his recovery, family members are running his eatery in his absence.

“Layo has always been happy to serve his community/customers, and now we, his family, ask for you all to reciprocate that support and love through prayers or any donation you can make,” added his family. To date, the fundraiser has generated $4,940 of its $20,000 goal.
