Amazon employees are taking time during the holiday delivery rush to help prepare and deliver winter food boxes to over 720 families across 15 schools in the West Contra Costa Unified School District.

The nonprofit Food for Thought partnered with Amazon to expand its 13th annual distribution. Amazon is supporting the effort through its “Amazon Local Good” program, where it provides pro bono logistics services in areas where it operates.

Each family will receive a winter food box containing pantry staples like beans, rice and pasta, fresh poultry and bread.

Today, Amazon Prime delivery trucks parked at Coronado Elementary School and employees worked with local officials and volunteers to assemble and load food boxes to distribute to local families.

When the young elementary school children, who are on 100 percent subsidized school meal programs, are on winter school break they don’t have easy-to-make, and healthy food items in their pantry,” Amazon representatives said. “Most of these children are raised by single parents or grandparents, most of whom have to take public transportation. This transportation is difficult during cold wet winters with small children. Having these items already in the pantry allows the family to spend quality time at home during the winter break as well have enough food to sustain them during the cold winter times.”
