Large family parties helped inspire this new, full-service Mexican restaurant in Richmond.

Family-run Tacos El Rulas is located at 232 23rd St., across from O’Reilly’s Auto Parts.

Raul Ramirez, his wife Tayde Rojas Lopez, and other family members including Eneris Ramirez Rojas, Viony Rojas, Angel Ramerez and Angeles Ramirez Rojas, operate the restaurant in a building that was once a storage warehouse. The building used to house the family’s food truck.

“They would hold large parties there from time to time, so my dad made the decision to open a full-service restaurant that would seat 150 people,” said Angeles.

Impressive murals color the restaurant’s interior and exterior. Angel said many portray famous artists and performers like Jenni Rivera, Chalino Sanchez and Vincente Fernandez. The muralist traveled from San Jose to complete the murals in three months, Eneris said.

What customers love about Tacos El Rulas is what inspired the full-service restaurant concept: an atmosphere of gathering with family.

“When people come here to eat, we cook their food the same way we do at home,” Angeles said. “We put so much love into our food and our customers let us know that.”

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Tacos El Rulas sold its tacos for just $1. It was Raul’s idea to thank the community and customers for supporting the restaurant.

Quick tip: Tacos El Rulas hosts Taco Tuesday, where it serves only pastor beef tacos.
