Multiple properties sustained damages as the result of a vegetation fire along the Richmond Greenway Trail that spread quickly amid high winds on Wednesday. No injuries were reported.
Just before 11:30 a.m., Richmond firefighters responded to the area of S. 39th Street and Ohio Avenue on a report of a vegetation fire, according to Richmond Firefighters Local 188, the union representing city firefighters. Fanned by 30 mph winds, the first crew arrived to find a rapidly growing blaze that had spread to at leeast one home and multiple backyards.
Additional resources were called and the fire was brought under control within about 45 minutes.
In all, four properties sustained damage to their backyards, with multiple sheds and ADUs destroyed. Two homes also sustained significant fire damage.
The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
“With yeserday’s red flag fire weather conditions, this incident could have been much worse in terms of property damage or injury to residents,” fire officials said. “Fast-moving fires such as this serve as a good reminder to remain vigilant as we are all still in fire season.”
