The community is invited to help usher in Richmond Promise’s newest class of nearly 500 college scholars at the organization’s “Annual Scholar Celebration” Saturday, Aug. 3 from 1-4 p.m. at the Richmond Civic Center.
The free event, which is open to the public, is set in a college quad-like atmosphere, complete with food trucks, games, booths with local colleges and universities and community resources. The ninth annual event aims to gather community members to celebrate its incoming class of scholars, according to the organization.
Richmond Promise’s Executive Director Christopher Whitmore underscored the Scholar Celebration offers a reminder that “working toward postsecondary success remains a priority for Richmond students and families.”
In 2016, the organization launched with a $35 million, 10-year investment by Chevron Richmond. The funds are part of a $90 million community benefits agreement between the City of Richmond and Chevron related to the $1 billion Refinery Modernization Project.
Richmond Promise’s scholars receive a $1,500 college scholarship toward pursuit of associate and bachelor degrees, as well as career technical education certifications. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years and includes key wraparound services.
The Richmond Civic Center is located at 440 Civic Center Plaza in Richmond. Learn more about the event and other details here.
