Dr. Celeste Beal, the great niece of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a nonviolence trainer at the King Center in Atlanta, visited King Elementary in Richmond on Monday for a mural unveiling and to celebrate the promotion of sixth graders at the school.
The mural honoring Dr. King was funded by a grant from the City of Richmond and aims to inspire future generations of activism, civil rights, justice and peace, according to the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD).
Mural artist Deonta Allen is a third generation King Elementary alumni.
“Four generations in Allen’s family have attended King Elementary, including his grandmother who was a beloved teacher at King for many years,” district officials said.
