Richmond director/choreographer premieres award-winning films

UpSwing Aerial Dance Company and Symmetricity will unveil “Sling Shot,” Sun., June 11 in Oakland, a film premiere of eight dance and music shorts, as well as a fundraiser.

The event will spotlight “the incredible films and music created during the pandemic,” per the show’s producers, and will “also serve as a fundraiser for UpSwing Aerial Dance Company and Symmetricity.” Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and the films will show from 1-2 p.m. at The New Parkway Theater, 474 24th St. in Oakland.

Overall, Sling Shot will showcase six award-winning aerial and site-specific dance films and two music films created films created by Richmond Director and Choreographer, Cherie Carson, alongside her fellow Director, David Creech.

Films during the event will include AloneTogether, Between River Rocks and Sand, Bones, Water Spirit, Knowing Each Other, Messages, Bad and Pressure. “There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the directors in a short, moderated Q & A after the showing,” according to the producers.

Music in the films was created by Dan Cantrell, Carolyn Wonderland, Dave Worm, Voices in a New World and includes the artistry of UpSwing Aerial Dance Company, per the producers. Aerialists featured in the dance films include UpSwing Company members Kirstin Brown, Helen Fitanides, Kiran Haithcox, Alissa Kaplan Soto and Helium Valentine.

“The event promises to be a unique experience for film and music lovers alike, offering a chance to support local artists, while also enjoying incredible films and music,” said the producers, noting that “Sling Shot is a remarkable opportunity to help support the arts community in the Bay Area.”

Tickets for this event range from $20-$50 and can be purchased here or at the door. Online tickets are $15 (before fees) and can be purchased here and watched virtually Mon., June 12, 2023 until Tues., July 04, 2023, 11 p.m. PDT.
