San Francisco Bay Ferry riders will soon be able to use their phone to purchase and use tickets for regular service or special event service thanks to a new mobile ticketing app.

Starting Tuesday, July 19, riders will be able to download the app and use their phones instead of Clipper cards or paper tickets to ride the ferry. Passengers using this option will show their mobile ticket upon exiting the ferry at their destination.

“The app also includes real-time ferry information and push notifications for service alerts,” SF Bay Ferry stated. “With the new system, you’ll also be able to purchase ferry tickets directly on the San Francisco Bay Ferry website.”

The SF Bay Ferry is also increasing staffing at the busiest terminals, especially downtown San Francisco, and paper tickets will be scanned upon disembarkation instead of being torn, starting July 19. The Vallejo terminal’s proof of payment system will also adjust to match the rest of the system, where riders will show proof of payment at the end of the ride rather than the beginning. The Vallejo Ferry Ticket Office is closing effective Aug. 15.
