A man involved in a car crash on Interstate 80 at El Portal Drive this morning died after suffering from cardiac arrest at the scene, while three more victims of the collision were transported to a regional trauma center for major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes about 4:45 a.m. and involved three vehicles — a Toyota RAV4, a Honda Civic, and a Toyota Corolla, the CHP said.

The CHP’s preliminary investigation indicates the RAV4 overturned and came to rest on its side in the No. 1 lane. Shortly after, both the Civic and Corolla separately struck the RAV4, the CHP said.

The driver of the RAV4 and two passengers were transported for major injuries, while a third passenger, a man in his 50s, suffered from cardiac arrest at the scene and was pronounced deceased at the hospital, the CHP said. His identity was not being released pending notification of next of kin.

The collision’s cause is under investigation. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, the CHP said.

The crash and subsequent investigation prompted lane closures on I-80 until about 7 a.m.
