Four West Contra Costa Unified School District schools closed for early dismissal at 10 a.m. Friday due to widespread power outages in Richmond and surrounding communities, the district said.

Those schools include Coronado Elementary School, Dover Elementary School, Grant Elementary School, King Elementary School.  The district initially announced the closures of also Lincoln Elementary School and Greenwood Academy, but power was restored at those schools and so students and staff could remain in school today.

“We have been monitoring the progress to restore power to schools, and due to the widespread outages, PG&E is not able to confirm restoration times,” the district said in a statement, adding that the superintendent decided to impose early dismissal at the schools “out of an abundance of caution and concern for safety.”

“We know the loss of power is a disruption, and the safety of students and staff is our highest priority,” The district said.

PG&E’s power outage map currently shows pockets of outages leaving thousands of customers, including businesses, without power. The utility is investigating the cause. To view outages, go here.
