Ever wonder what the “J” and “E” stand for in J&E Auto Repairs on 23rd Street in Richmond? It stands for a father and his two sons working together to continue a local legacy.
Javier Magallanes has provided auto repair services in different locations of Richmond for about 25 years. In 2015, he teamed with his sons, Enrique and Javier, Jr., to open J & E Auto Repairs. The family business was initially located at 23rd and Barrett, but in 2019 relocated to 23rd and Roosevelt.
“It was something I grew up doing with [my father]. I would tag along with him to his job, and he taught me everything he knew about working on cars, and working in the office,” said Enrique Magallanes, who has been in the profession for six years. Along with Javier Jr., the Magallenes team combines for ample years of experience working on both domestic and import vehicles of all makes and models.
“We provide full mechanical services for cars and trucks, we do minor body work when necessary,” Enrique said. “We have parts for lift kits, big wheels and tires. Whatever needs to be done we can take care of it.”
J & E’s list of auto repair services is comprehensive: tires, brakes, engine and transmission, engine maintenance, heating and cooling, electrical and electronics, undercar coverage, servicing for 4x4s, hybrid and electric cars, and even medium duty diesel trucks. “Like I said we do it all here,” Enrique said.
The company focuses on transparent, competent repairs.
“Honesty is our driving force here,” Enrique said. “Our policy is to be straight forward with our clients at all times, and that lets the customer and us know we have done a great job meeting their needs.”
When asked about their favorite cars to work on, Enrique smiled while repeating J & E encourages both foreign and domestic models.
“But old cars are something we really enjoy working on here,” he said. “Custom jobs are something we enjoy doing and doing well. But more than anything else, it is the R and R we enjoy doing, the in-and-out work.”
The Magallenes’ love doing business in Richmond. When he’s not pulling long hours at the shop with his father and brother, Enrique says he’s loving local Mexican eateries.
“You can go up and down the streets here and find plenty of good food,” he said.
J & E’s hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
