Cars lined up for several blocks on Macdonald Avenue in Richmond on Saturday to benefit from Soulful Softball Sunday’s 6th Annual Backpack and School Supplies Giveaway.
About 200 backpacks were donated at this year’s event at Nicholl Park, which shifted to a curbside pickup format in order to promote social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Soulful Softball Sunday founder Rodney Alamo Brown and volunteers served families from park’s entrance on a first come, first served basis.
The event was sponsored Cooperative Federal Credit Union in Berkeley, along with Soulful Softball Sunday and New Life Movement.
“I just couldn’t believe it when I looked down MacDonald Avenue this morning,” Brown said. The cars lined up and the line was at least three blocks long.”
Added Audra Golddie Williams, a volunteer and candidate for the West Contra Costa Unified School District Board, “It was wonderful that we were able to help so many families today!”
