The developer that owns Hilltop Mall has rebranded the 78-acre property as the East Bay Science and Technology Center and plans to sell or lease it, according to the San Francisco Business Times.
After purchasing the property in 2017, LBG Real Estate Cos. had planned to modernize the shopping center and construct housing, office space and a hotel on the Hilltop drive property.
Those plans have since changed, with the COVID-19 pandemic cited as a contributing factor, the Business Times reported on Friday. The mostly vacant mall, about 16 percent occupied by retailers, is “now looking to offload the asset, pitching it as a new potential center for life sciences and biotech space,” the news publication said.
A changing retail market and “need for life science, biotech and office space in East Bay locations” were cited as reasons to rebrand.
