The Richmond Police Department has announced it will conduct a DUI checkpoint operation on Dec. 13.

The checkpoint will occur on Richmond Parkway near W. Ohio Ave and is scheduled for the evening hours, police said.

“The goal of the checkpoint is to educate motorists about the dangers of impaired driving and to ensure all motorists in the area are driving sober,” according to RPD.

Law enforcement agencies are required by law to announce DUI checkpoints ahead of their operation. DUI checkpoints were legally challenged in 1990 on the basis that they violated Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures.
