MLK, Jr. Park Fitness Zone grand opening set for Sunday

A grand opening is set to be held this Sunday for a new Fitness Zone at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Richmond.

The free event featuring food and music will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park at Marina Way South and Virginia Avenue, according to the city.

During the free grand opening event, residents will also learn about the Richmond Wellness Trail bicycle-pedestrian corridor that is currently in the planning stages and aims to ultimately connect Richmond BART station to the Richmond Ferry. The Trust for Public Land and City of Richmond, in partnership with Groundwork Richmond, Rich City Rides, and The Watershed Project, are hosting Sunday’s event.

The Fitness Zone was funded by grants from Kaiser Permanente Northern California, the California Department of Housing and Community Development Housing Related Parks Program, and in kind contributions from The Trust for Public Land.

The Richmond Wellness Trail is being funded by an Urban Greening Grant from the California Natural Resources Agency, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Hellman Foundation, in kind contributions from The Trust for Public Land, and the City of Richmond.
