Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle collision on westbound I-80 near the Barrett Avenue exit in Richmond this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported just before 4 a.m. near the San Pablo Avenue exit and closed down all westbound lanes, which have since been reopened.

According to CHP, officers patrolling I-80 eastbound passing Cutting Boulevard just before 4 a.m. saw a white vehicle, high centered on the concrete center divider wall. They went to the scene and saw all lanes of I-80 westbound blocked and a Honda CRV completely engulfed in flames in a westbound lane. A white Nissan sedan was high centered on the center divider wall, CHP said. Two other vehicles were later determined to be involved.

The lanes remained blocked until 8:05 a.m.. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

No further information was immediately available.
