A 29-year-old woman was in critical condition after a domestic violence-related shooting in San Pablo Wednesday night, police said.

At 10:18 p.m., officers were called to a home on South Victoria Court on a report of a man threatening to shoot himself, police said. As officers approached the home, they heard two gunshots and a women running from the home.

The woman was suffering from a gunshot wound to her abdomen. She was transported to a local hospital where she remained in critical condition Thursday, police said.

Javier Portillo, 30, of San Pablo, followed the woman out of the home and was detained and arrested. Portillo was the only other person in the residence at the time of the shooting, police said.

In the home, officers recovered several unregistered firearms, including the 9mm handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, and a large amount of ammunition, police said.

“Investigators learned the suspect and victim were involved in a domestic dispute at the time of the shooting,” police said.

Portillo was subsequently booked into jail on suspicion of attempted homicide.
