The 8th Annual McKinley Williams-John Easterling Community Chess Tournament is set for Saturday, Jan. 26.
The whole community is invited to this free tournament at the Richmond Recreation Complex at 3230 Macdonald Ave. The quad-style tourney will have registration frmo 10:30 a.m. to noon, with rounds occurring at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Department, the tournament recognizes the contributions of Dr. McKinley Williams, President Emeritus of Contra Costa College as well as the late Mr. John Easterling’s efforts to promote the Royal Game of Chess in the city of Richmond.
“Dr. Williams has been very supportive of chess initiatives in Richmond,” said TC Ball of the West Coast Chess Alliance. “He believes that chess can have a positive impact young
minds. While President of Contra Costa Community College, he created the concept of community chess tournament, which was unique because it brings the whole chess community together, beginners and experts, the young and the old.”
Mr. Easterling was a mentor to many young chess players in Richmond and the Bay Area, exposing hundreds to the game. He also taught the game of chess every Wednesday’s afternoon at the Richmond’s Children’s Library for many years.
