The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is looking for five people to serve as Volunteer Fire Chaplains. The recruitment will fill current openings and create a list of eligible candidates for future vacancies over the next two years.

The Chaplaincy Program provides spiritual and emotional support to firefighters, staff, and their families. First responders often deal with intense stress and traumatic events that can impact their health and careers. Chaplains offer proactive care to help personnel manage these experiences and stay healthy. These volunteers serve as non-denominational ministers who work with the district’s peer support teams during crises.

Volunteer chaplains perform several key tasks to support the department. They provide counseling to individuals and crews after traumatic events and assist in notifying families if a member is seriously injured or killed. Chaplains visit sick or injured staff, attend funerals, and participate in ceremonial functions like station dedications. They also act as a resource for members when they deal with the public during difficult incidents involving accidental deaths or suicides. Volunteers are encouraged to visit fire stations regularly to build relationships with crews.

Applicants must have a valid California driver’s license and at least five years of experience as ordained clergy. They must be in good standing with a religious group or receive a waiver from the Fire Chief. Candidates also need specific training in crisis intervention and suicide prevention. Once appointed, chaplains must join the California Fire Chaplain Association and the Federation of Fire Chaplains within six months. Each chaplain serves at least eight hours per month and stays on call for emergencies.

The selection process involves an oral interview, a review by the Fire Chief, and a background check. Interested individuals must submit an application electronically through the official Google Form. Applicants must also email letters of endorsement to the program coordinator. Resumes cannot be used as a substitute for the official application.
