White Pony Express (WPE) launched its “Growing Hope, Delivering Love” fundraising campaign to address growing food insecurity in Contra Costa County.
The Concord-based nonprofit rescues 10,500 meals daily from grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers markets countywide. Volunteers inspect and sort this surplus food for distribution to local nonprofits at no cost. The operation serves over 130,000 individuals annually and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by diverting food from landfills.
White Pony Express said it successfully recovered 20 percent more food last year, but added that demand continues to exceed current supply. Local families face increased financial pressure as grocery prices remain nearly 30 percent higher than 2020 levels. These factors have led to a growing waitlist for the organization, with more than 75 local nonprofits currently requesting weekly food deliveries, according to the nonprofit.
To address this need, a nine-week campaign aims to raise $350,000 to maintain the White Pony Express’ fleet and logistics network, according to CEO Eve Birge. A community partner will match the first $50,000 in donations dollar for dollar.
“WPE’s Spring Campaign presents an opportunity to join in service to our neighbors as we work to provide access to good food to the hungry and under-resourced,” said Birge.
