Benjamin Carpenter of Kennedy High School joins Carolyn Landau of Kensington Elementary School as West Contra Costa educators nominated for the 2026–2027 Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year program.

Both were honored at a special reception held on Thursday, March 5, according to the Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE). Carpenter and Landau are among 22 teachers chosen from more than 7,300 education professionals serving public schools and community colleges throughout the county. Each educator was selected for their ability to inspire students and their years of hard work in the classroom.

“This recognition reflects years of dedication, creativity, and contagious energy that makes these teachers stand out in their school communities,” said Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey. “I look forward to visiting their classrooms to personally thank each teacher for the unwavering commitment they bring to students daily.”

2026 Teachers of the Year nominees/CCCOE

The Teacher of the Year program is now in its 54th year and follows a specific selection process managed by the CCCOE. In April, a committee will review applications to name four finalists. By September, two county winners will be announced during a formal celebration. These two winners will then move on to represent the county in the California State Teacher of the Year competition.

To be eligible for this honor, teachers must have at least eight years of experience and work as full-time or long-term substitute instructors. The selection process includes classroom visits, interviews, and short speeches where the nominees share their personal teaching styles. The CCCOE serves 18 school districts and approximately 169,261 students, providing support services and professional development to schools across the area.
